Fish can be a very relaxing thing for children to have in their room. Not only does having a fish tank help them appreciate nature but it can also teach them responsibility. A small 5 gallon tank is good size to start your kids out with.
Which works great for keeping a betta. If you are looking for schooling fish you will want to move to a
30 gallon tank.
When setting up a large tank you need to run a back filter rated for a
30 gallon tank.
I actually prefer a forty-gallon filter because it is better to over filter then under filter a tank. A
tank heater rated for 30 gallons will be needed if you plan to keep tropical fish.
Most tropical fish prefer their water to be a bit warmer then most rooms are kept.
The question comes down to what type of fish you should keep? Brightly colored fish are always a kid favorite. Most people naturally think about gold fish. However gold fish are very messy and require a large tank. Harlequin rasboras or cardinal tetras might be a better choice. These fish can be kept together about seven of each would be perfect. Cory cat fish can also be added in nicely with schooling fish.
You can even mix five moss barbs, five albino tiger barbs, and five tiger barbs. These fish are more aggresive, but they are schooling fish. They shouldn’t be kept with other fish because they like to nip fins.
Having fish in their own rooms gives my kids something to have pride in because they feel responsible. Plus the white noise from the water falling helps your kids to sleep a bit better.
